Picking Your Lottery Numbers

Ok there is no way to predict the lottery. Lottery numbers are picked at random and there isn't much you can do to predict which numbers are going to come up. What you can do however is to ensure you choose numbers that are picked by as few other people as possible so if you do win a jackpot you will get more of a share.

Here are some hints and tips for picking unique sequences of numbers.

1. Don’t choose birthdays or special dates

In the UK lottery the numbers 1-49 are used. If you choose your lottery numbers from dates then in effect you are only using the numbers 1-31  so the chances of other people picking similar numbers is increased

Also by using birthdays and special dates you may be picking the same numbers as a lot of other people.

2. Don't pick past winning numbers

Some people believe that winning numbers are in some way lucky and will continue to choose them.

3. Avoid number patterns

There are hundreds of people who use patterns such as 2,4,6,8,10,12 to pick their lottery numbers. That's a lot of  people to share your winnings with ! Also if you do the lottery manually don't select your numbers based on a pattern on the lottery slip.

4. Avoid lottery tips services

Don't use a tips service to select your numbers. Imagine how many people are doing the same.

Remember choosing your number in a totally random way will help ensure that as few other people as possible have selected and played those lottery numbers.

Playing the Same Numbers

Is it a good idea to play the same numbers in each lottery draw? Simple question, but one that is fraught with problems.

Playing the same numbers from week to week does not increase our chances of winning, of course, but there are still two big advantages to taking this approach. These are:

  • Playing the same numbers in every draw allows you to play many lottery games by subscription. Simply complete a subscription form with the numbers that you want to play, pay the required fee for the number of draws you want to enter, and then sit back and watch the results week by week. No queuing in shops and no need to check your ticket manually.

  • If you play the same numbers for every draw then checking to see if you have won or not is as simple as it can be, because once you have memorised the numbers you play you can see at a glance whether they match the ones that are published in newspapers or broadcast on television.

Of course, there is also a disadvantage of playing the same numbers, and that is that if you happen to forget to buy a lottery ticket for any reason, you will instantly know whether or not you would have won. Imagine the stress if you've played the same numbers for 10 years and then forget to enter one week or you can't get to a retailer. Murphy's law dictates that will be the week they come up.

Are Lottery Wheels Worthwhile?

Lottery wheels are systematic lottery entries that use several lines – often scores or even hundreds of lines – to offer the player a certain limited kind of guarantee. For example, you might select 15 numbers in the Lotto game and enter them in such a way that you are guaranteed to get 3 numbers on the same ticket if 6 of your 15 selections are drawn. That sounds like a great guarantee, and you certainly can’t lose out by taking a lottery wheeling approach, but are lottery wheels really worth the effort of sorting out all of those numbers in a carefully planned way, or would players fare just as well by entering the same quantity of Lucky Dip entries?

The simplest answer to that question is that it depends on the results that you get from your lottery wheeling. If you try lottery wheeling and win a prize that puts you in profit – or maybe even a jackpot prize – then you would obviously say that the practice is very worthwhile. If, on the other hand, you try wheeling and don’t win even a minimal prize for several draws in a row then you might well conclude that the approach isn’t at all worth the time and effort that you put into it.

Putting aside the experiential side of things, what we want to ask here is if lottery wheels are worthwhile from a mathematical perspective, and the short answer is no. Although lottery wheels offer limited guarantees (the extent of the guarantee depending on the type of lottery wheel employed and the quantity of numbers it allows you to play) they all rely on you hitting a certain quantity of numbers from your selections. In other words, the efficacy of wheeling is still completely dependent on the luck of the draw.

The only aspect of wheeling that has any significant impact on your chances of becoming a lottery winner is that they force you to buy multiple tickets. A wheel that requires nine lines will therefore give you nine times as much chance of landing a prize as a single ticket entry. But if you were to enter nine Lucky Dip tickets, or nine tickets with any other numbers of your choosing, your chances would increase by the same amount.

Of course, if you like to play Lottery wheels then you should feel free to do so, as you won’t reduce your chances of winning by one iota and you could well get lucky enough to land a major prize. But by the same token, those of you who would rather increase your chances by entering multiple tickets using whatever numbers you choose can enjoy exactly the same odds of success, and without any of the additional effort that lottery wheeling involves.

Lottery Software

If you have a feeling that you are buying lottery tickets each week and you have little or no chance of winning then it might be worth visiting the many lottery software providers that can be found online at the moment. The Lotto software on offer ranges from the ridiculous to the sublime, and some provide such technically advanced software to do what is effectively pulling a few numbers out of a hat, that you have to ask yourself should I start a degree course now just so that I can understand the instructions. The many types of software available produce any number of the following; complicated reports, databases, statistics, graphs, filters and previous results analysis yet all ultimately offer the same information – that of the most likely winning numbers.

Not all the lottery software providers out there produce programmes that are so complicated, one in particular Lotto Picker provides lotto software that is informative, user friendly and to be blunt not an overpriced rip off. You do have to ask yourself though, that if the lotto software is so successful then surely there would be so many lottery wins that the huge jackpots would diminish due to the high proportion of winners.

It would appear from the many sites out there that winning the lottery is dependent on a substantial lottery software package being purchased, if so then how does the pensioner who buys a one off ticket manage to become a big jackpot winner from just £1 without the use of such technology? Surely if you are going to invest many hundreds of pounds to purchase a lottery software programme you would have just as much chance of winning by increasing your weekly spend on tickets. Clearly there are big winners in respect of the lottery software but it has to be said it is the lottery programme makers themselves that ultimately come out on top.
